Interesting find when we were out yesterday in the Coburg Hills east of Eugene. We came across a downed Doug Fir with a cluster of what we thought was Winter Chanterelles. But, upon closer observation they were not. We brought them home to key them out. After consulting Mushrooms Demystified and conferring with Marcia Peeters we concluded they are Chrysomphalina chrysophylla (note: former genus omphalina). Evidently they are found in many parts of the country but are not very common. At first glance, they look very much like Winter Chanterelles. But, they do have true gills that are more yellow than Winter Chanterelles. Note that we placed an actual Winter Chanterelle in the 2nd and 3rd pictures for comparison. The center of the Chrysomphalina is depressed, but does not have a hole through to the stem ... but the stem was hollow like a yellow foot.
