These were growing in mixed woods of the Big Sandy Creek Unit(Big Thicket National Preserve). They looked like 4 large brown cupcakes sitting in the forest duff. Eventually I learned they were the remains of a Calvatia species that had lost its spore case with the sterile base remaining. There are about 3 candidates but examining a few of the residual spores strongly suggested C. craniformis. The spores were small, ~ 3-4 microns and mostly smooth. Also this species is the most likely to be growing in the woods rather than open pastures, etc.
