Growing on the ground in mixed woods in the Turkey Creek Unit of the Big Thicket NP. Could not get a spore print. Spores ~ 5-6 microns, roundish and strongly tuberculate. I've called something similar to this Hydnellum spongiosipes and the spores for these are a close match to that species. However the cap is very whitish and the spines are more purple than brown and did not appear to stain when bruised. Hydnellum ferrugineum seems to be a closer possibility.
