Growing on an old log in mostly mixed coastal conifer woods. Caps up to 7.2 cm across and not viscid/slimy in dry conditions. Spores ~ 4.5-6.1(6.9) X 3.3-4.8 micons, broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid, Q(avg) = 1.33, smooth, apparently with no apical pore. The spores look generally smaller than what is reported for P. squarrosa, no obvious apical pore, the scales more red-brown, and no sign of a greenish-yellow gill stage. Therefore, I'm favoring the P. squarrosoides despite being mostly unreported in California.
