This cryptic species was collected at the NJMA group foray. Unknown habitat (presumably deciduous woods). Cap color similar to Boletus nobilis. The stipe colors & texture are more in line with Xanthoconium affine. All pictures were taken 7-8 hrs post collection. > The buff-tan cap is ~5 cm wide; the cap thickness is 6 mm at its widest point. > The pore surface is pale buff at collection time and yellowish tan 30 hrs later after being stored in the fridge. Pores are round, 2 per mm. > The tube layer is 3 mm thick at its widest point, medium yellow brown at maturity. > The stipe is 6.7 cm long, 0.8 cm wide in the middle and 1.1 cm wide at the apex and base; yellowish at the apex apex, with brownish streaks below over a whitish background and with some areas of mostly white toward the base, not reticulate. > The exposed context is white and unchanging both in cap and stipe. > Chemical reactions were run 30 hrs post collection (the mushroom was stored at 38 F overnight): KOH = deep yellow intensifying to medium orange-brown on cap surface; barely noticeable pink-magenta hue on cap context NH3 = yellow on cap under the drop, with a pinkish-lilac "aura" due to ammonia vapors; pinkish-red on pore surface; barely noticeable pink-magenta hue on cap context FeSO4 = olive-green on cap surface; negative to pale bluish on cap context
