This one has me totally stumped. Here's what I know. A pair of side-by-side specimens fruiting in ground, primarily Oak-Hickory woods. One specimen appeared to have been disturbed, perhaps by an animal, since this is a seldom frequented area with little, if any, foot traffic. Cap: 6.5 cm. "warty" (see close-up image), fragile -- falling apart easily when handled. Stipe: 4 cm. X 2 cm., spongy, not fragile or crumbly like cap. Flesh under cap and within stipe appeared to contain a rosy "juice" which stained surrounding materials when crushed, yet does not appear to come through the gills per se as with Lactarius milk; note the leaves in the in situ photo where one specimen was crushed. Strong unpleasant odor -- hard to describe. KOH slowly yellow on cap. Obtained a white spore print.
