A pair of mature, dry specimens fruiting in woodchip mulch bed surrounding a mature Pin Oak in my yard. Fruit body: 2.2 cm wide and 2 cm. tall, hard. Tough rind = 1 mm. Pseudobase with abundant yellow-white rhizomorphs. Purplish-black spore mass with white threads throughout. KOH yellow-brown.
