Growing on the cut end of a spruce log on the side of the trail. Basidiocarp rubbery to corky. Fertile surface gray-brown. Cap 7 mm thick where measured and possibly thicker elsewhere. Cystidia brown, encrusted and visible under low magnification. Cystidia not arranged in fascicles. Setae absent. Clamp connections present. Basidiocarp turning black with a drop of 5% KOH. I was only able to find one spore, which measured 13.5 x 4.8 μm. This spore was only slightly above the range for V. abietina in length, but this combined with location (V. abietina is rare in Colorado while V. fimbriata is common) makes V. fimbriata more likely.
