Growing near Quercus sect. Quercus, Carya sp., Fagus grandifolia, Ostrya virginiana and Acer saccharum. Growing scattered and locally very abundant. Scabers brownish and arranged in longitudinal ridges. Pores small, yellow and bruising brown. Context white, bruising red before turning black. Cap rugose and areolate. 5% KOH reddish-brown on cap, reddish-brown on stem and yellowish-brown on context. NH4OH light yellowish-brown on cap, yellowish-brown on context before turning gray, yellowish-brown on stem. 10% FeSO4 gray on context, negative on cap, light grayish on stem.
