These sizable orbs fruit prolifically in the lawns throughout my neighborhood, much to the consternation of homeowners, as Kuo describes on his Mushroom Expert web site. They arise from the soil, appearing as a solid ball at first, then split open and gradually turn back the edges of the rind into 7 or 8 "rays" revealing the spore mass inside. I have found them in various stages, but have never had an opportunity to capture the developmental process in a series of photographs before. I thought I would take a photo every day for a week, thinking this specimen would fruit and decay quickly as fleshy mushrooms do. To my surprise, however, the developmental stages progressed very slowly ... over weeks, not days. This collage shows the development over the past four weeks. The additional photo, taken today, shows the specimen buried under a layer of icy snow. My intention is to create a follow-up collage as this specimen progresses to its final stage of decay ... if I am able to capture this process between snowfalls.
