This fruiting appeared as a group of irregularly shaped purple patches on the loosening bark of a dead tulip poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera. Underneath the bark the fungus consisted of a white, rubbery sheet approximately 1 mm thick. The exposed purple patches eventually faded in color and developed fuzzy brown caps with weepy, white margins. Then the droplets disappeared, leaving small holes in the cap margins. No pores on the cap undersides. Cap flesh 1-2 mm thick. The rubbery consistency seems to be derived from a cartilaginous central sheet of tissue that is uniform gray in color.
