Original Herbarium Label: Meripilus giganteus (Pers.) P. Karst. Growing on roots of Hippocastanea sp. on watered street boulevard The same site as 2016 observation: http://mushroomobserver.org/255011 That one was found by Jason Holkko & Juliet Pendray Dr. Jim Ginns draw our attention (2017/07/16) to this article: Larsen, M.J. & Frances F. Lombard. 1988. The status of Meripilus giganteus (Aphyllophorales, Polyporaceae) in North America. Mycologia 80: 612-621. This particular specimen has 3-5 pores per 1 mm. This and the pilear surface being "finely fibrillose with minute squamules" would suggest that this is an introduced European species, Meripilus giganteus and not the North American native Meripilus sumstinei (Murrill) M.J. Larsen & Lombard.
