Found under hardwoods and near mountain laurel. Largest cap shown in this photo has a diameter of 7 cm. Another cap nearby exceeded 10 cm. Odor cross between wet wood and farinaceous. KOH on flesh black. The odor and KOH reaction do not match Baird's description of Hydnellum ferrugipes, if that is a distinct species.
