Growing gregariously seemingly from soil but also from the bases of rotting birch and oak stumps nearby, singly or in small loose clumps. Most likely attached to rotting roots of those stumps. Young caps with a cortina that becomes part of a persistent ring that develops a conspicuous brown edge. Cap light yellow brown, covered with darker scales and hairs. Cap edge becomes striate with maturity. Stipe cream, aging to brownish from the base up, covered with loose white fibrils. Yellow "fur" (not just staining) at the bases of the stipes. Dark brown to black rhizomorph (round in x.s.) attached to stipe base.
