Coker wrote in The Club and Coral Mushrooms (Clavarias) of the United States and Canada, that Clavaria angulispora smells "distinctly of old ham." That is not my experience in western North Carolina. Here, the smell is distinctly different: a pleasant blend of weak chlorine and pine that you wouldn't mind in a cleaning product. (I find this species in deciduous woods, a pine-free habitat.)
