A NEMF Foray collection for a MycoFlora sequencing project. NAMP collection â- MF54411. Two collections of what appears to be the same species by Joel Horman and Gene Binder from the same walk merged together. The stipital ornamentation varied from the typical variobrunneus netting in older/more mature specimens to almost no reticulation at all in young ones. Furthermore, younger basidiomes had a dense medium-brown woolly squamulose-scabrous ornamentation at the apex, which I've never seen to occur in Tylopilus. Both collections had these peculiar fruiting bodies. Overall I think variobrunneus is a reasonable proposal, but I wouldn't call this morpho-gestalt typical of the species based on my own experience with it.
