Collection found in maple/hemlock forest with beech and ash subdominants (ash mostly recently dead from ash boring beetle) near and south of Goderich, Ontario. My first sighting of what I think are kings. But I'm not sure of my ID and would welcome feedback. Several specimens closely associated with sugar maples (growing at root bases). Slugs in cap and stems. Large with pale brown velvety cap, white context, buff white tubes turning slightly pink/mauve. Pores small, < 0.5 mm, bruising yellow/brown with rough abrasion. No staining on cap or context. Stem firm, somewhat fibrous, pale cream to buff with clear reticulum and longitudinally elongate lacunae. Taste mild; odour nondescript. A few otherwise identical mushrooms with darker brown caps found in the area.
