Growing scattered from soil (I dug to make certain there was no wood underneath) directly under white pine in a mixed pine, oak, maple forest. Caps 3-3.5 cm, golden brown, covered with dense reddish brown granules, solid brown with granules at the center. Plane with a central bump. Gills white to cream, attached, depressed at the stipe, crowded, edges slightly wavy. Stipe 3-3.5 cm long x 5-7 mm thick, swollen at the base and with white mycelia. Granular sheath the same color as the cap and about 2/3 of the way up the stem where it ends in an annulus that seems to dry up with age. Smooth and white to golden brown above the annulus. Spore print white to cream. Microscopy: Spores ellipsoid, smooth, inamyloid in Melzers, 3.6-4.9 x 2.6-3.1, n=30. No cystidia. Scattered clamps in the gill tissue. Cap surface with chains of reddish brown inflated cells.
