Growing gregariously in small but tight clusters at the base of a mature basswood tree (likely T. americana). No other potential hosts nearby. I have never seen these mushrooms here before. Incidentally, this is the same spot where A. phalloides of obs 188196 was collected 4 years ago almost to the day; it's been growing here every year, including 2018. I usually don't bother with corts. I only picked these in hopes of putting a name because of the unusual mycorrhizal association. Otherwise, identification of a violet-brown capped cort from subgenus Phlegmacium looked like a certain and quick dead end to me. A lucky Google search "Cortinarius growing with Tilia" led me to Mycowalt's obs 112094, where a relationship with basswood was mentioned by Irene Andersson. A further look online for C. balteatocumitilis suggested this could be it. I understand there are other similar-looking taxa with names beginning with "balteato-". Didn't save this particular collection because the mushrooms were found uprooted a day or two ago by people or squirrels. Was hoping to get a fresh and more mature voucher later, though it's been rather cold and rainy and they were not in a hurry to get any bigger.
