Annotation by G. F. Atkinson: Gyromitra gigas (Krombh.) Quel. Syn. Gyromira curtipes Fr., Atl. Sv. 34, pl. 55, 1860; Boudier, Icon. Myc. 2. 116, pl. 222, 1907. Boudier suggests that G. curtipes Fr. is a young form of G. gigas, and I at first took the specimen to be G. curtipes because of the smooth spores, but search for older spores revealed them to be minutely roughened. G.F.A. Plant 11 cm high, pileus 6-7 cm high, 6 cm broad, stem 4 cm high, 5.5 cm broad, the broadest way. Pileus inflated, strongy gyrose, but large folds, few smaller ones weak, pinkish brown (near cinnamon to orange-cinnamon R. 1912). Asci cylindrical 8-spored, about 300 μ. Paraphyses septate, with brown granular content, slightly enlarged toward the fuse end. Spores fusoid with a large central oil drop and often accessory smaller ones by either side with a "cap" at each end and minutely roughened at full maturity, 28-34 x 10-14. G.F.A Annotation by A. S. Methven, 2 May 1011: USA, New York, Tompkins Co., Dryden, Observation Hill, McLean Moor, 42.6552016°N, -76.291044°E. Collected by V.C. Dunlap. 5 May 1917. In mossy ground. Notes on dried ascomata. Collection consists of a single ascoma. Hymenophore up to 3.5 cm diam, 4 cm high; surface wrinkled, brown to dark brown. Stipe up to 4.5 cm long, 2 cm diam, equal, convoluted, surface grey-brown. Asci 250-300 x 17.5-20 μm, cylindric, operculate, thin-walled, hyaline, eight-spored. Ascospores 28-35 × 12-14 μm, (Lm = 30.97 μm; Wm = 13.05 μm; Q=2.14-2.52; Qm = 2.38), ellipsoid to fusoid, at times inequilateral, uni- to triguttulate; walls up to 1 μm thick, appearing smooth at 400x, appearing finely roughened at 1000x, cyanophilic; apiculus conspicuous, knob-like, apex rounded, 2-2.5 μm long, decurrent, cyanophilic. Paraphyses cylindric, aseptate, unbranched. apices inflated, up to 7.5-10 μm diam, golden brown in KOH. Excipulum a textura intricata. Conclusion. Based on molecular data this specimen represents G. americanigigas.
