cap: ranges between 3-5cm across; convex; sticky and thinly slimy when fresh, but dries quickly; bald; bright red, developing yellowish or brownish areas with age; margin has a slight overhanging sterile portion; cap rim has thin white or yellow lining. pore surface: dark to pale red when young, becoming brownish red with age; bruising promptly dark blue, often exuding clear or yellowish droplets when young; 2-3 pores per mm; tubes yellowish. stem: 4-8cm long; up to 2cm thick; about equal in width; coarsely reticulate over entire length with red or occasionally yellow areas; often bruising blue. flesh: whitish to yellow inside; often bruising blue when sliced. Spore print olive brown
